Unix Timestamp Converter
Convert epoch timestamps to readable dates and back. Auto-detects seconds, milliseconds, microseconds and nanoseconds, handles time zones and DST, and outputs ISO 8601 and RFC 1123.

Fix the partition key that trusts the string
The same bug, in production: a warehouse partition key that takes the local date instead of the UTC one. Medium · about 10 min · runs in your browser, no signup.
How to use Timestamp Converter
Paste your timestamp
Any epoch value — the unit is detected from the digit count, or pick it yourself.
Pick a time zone
The display zone for the human-readable output, and the zone the date picker is read in.
Copy the format you need
ISO 8601, RFC 1123, seconds or milliseconds — one click each.
Go the other way
Use the right-hand panel to turn a calendar date and time into an epoch value.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a Unix timestamp?
A Unix timestamp is the number of seconds elapsed since 00:00:00 UTC on 1 January 1970, known as the Unix epoch. Leap seconds are excluded, so it is a simple, monotonic count rather than a true elapsed-time measure. Because it is a plain integer with no time zone attached, it is the standard way to store and transmit instants in databases, APIs and log files.
How do I know if a timestamp is in seconds or milliseconds?
Count the digits. A 10-digit value is seconds and lands in the present era; a 13-digit value is milliseconds. 16 digits is microseconds and 19 is nanoseconds. This converter auto-detects from the digit count, and you can override it if your value is unusual. The classic bug is reading a millisecond timestamp as seconds, which puts your date around the year 57000.
What is the 2038 problem?
Systems that store Unix time in a signed 32-bit integer overflow at 03:14:07 UTC on 19 January 2038, wrapping to December 1901. Most modern languages and 64-bit systems use a 64-bit integer and are unaffected, but embedded devices, older C code and some database columns still carry the risk. If you are storing epoch values, use a 64-bit type.
Does a Unix timestamp have a time zone?
No — a Unix timestamp always refers to UTC. The time zone only matters when you display it or when you convert a wall-clock date into a timestamp. That is why this tool asks for a zone on the date-to-timestamp side: "9 AM on 3 March" is a different instant in Kolkata than in New York, so the same input produces different epoch values.
How do I convert a timestamp in Python, JavaScript or SQL?
In Python, use datetime.fromtimestamp(ts, tz=timezone.utc) for seconds. In JavaScript, new Date(ts * 1000) because the Date constructor takes milliseconds. In PostgreSQL, to_timestamp(ts). In MySQL, FROM_UNIXTIME(ts). Going the other way: int(dt.timestamp()), Math.floor(Date.now() / 1000), and EXTRACT(EPOCH FROM ts) respectively.
Is this timestamp converter free and private?
Yes. Everything runs in your browser using the built-in Intl and Date APIs — no server call, no account, and nothing you paste is transmitted or stored. Time zone conversions use the browser IANA database, so daylight saving transitions are handled correctly.
